Couples’ Therapy

What is Couples’ Therapy?

Couples therapy is a fantastic option to help couples navigate and resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationship. It is typically conducted by a trained psychologist who specializes in working with couples. At the MAD Clinic of Richmond, we integrate and apply both the Gottman Method and IBCT (Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy) which can provide a comprehensive and highly effective approach to relationship counseling. The integration of these two well-established therapeutic methods combines the strengths of both to address various aspects of a couple's relationship.

Gottman Method: This approach is renowned for its research-based strategies and focus on relationship dynamics. It emphasizes the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" (criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling) and seeks to replace them with healthier communication patterns.

IBCT (Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy): This approach focuses on emotional acceptance and change. It combines acceptance strategies, encouraging partners to accept each other's differences, and change strategies, encouraging behavior change in response to identified problems.

Integrating these two approaches in couples therapy involves a holistic approach to addressing relationship issues. It combines the structured assessment and communication skills of the Gottman Method with the emphasis on emotional acceptance and change strategies of IBCT.

This integrated approach allows couples to address their conflicts, enhance their communication, rebuild trust, and create a more emotionally satisfying and harmonious relationship. Dr. Edwards will tailor the treatment to the unique needs of the couple, using elements from both methods to provide a well-rounded and personalized approach to couples therapy.

What To Expect

For your first session, both you and your partner will appear together - during the first 10 minutes, Dr. Edwards will review the informed consent document and the practice’s policies, and answer any questions you or your partner may have. Afterward, she will spend 50 minutes with both you and your partner (together) to better understand the problems affecting your relationship, and any relevant history that could help Dr. Edwards establish a conceptualization of your relationship dynamic.

01 | First Session

For your second session, you and your partner will come in separately for an individual session with Dr. Edwards where she will better understand each one of you individually, and go over any information that you would like her to know that you may have not felt comfortable disclosing in your first visit.

02 | Second Session

This session is geared towards ironing out a treatment plan with relevant goals that will become the focus of treatment. Dr. Edwards will overview her approach in assisting you and your partner to achieve your relevant treatment goal(s). At the end, she will work with both you and your partner to identify a feasible time and date for your first therapy appointment going forward.
