Depression

Depressive disorders, commonly referred to as depression, are a group of mental health conditions characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities. These disorders can significantly impact a person's daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Depressive disorders vary in severity and duration, and they encompass a range of conditions, including major depressive disorder (MDD), persistent depressive disorder (formerly known as dysthymia), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and bipolar-depressive disorder.

Psychotherapy, often referred to as talk therapy or counseling, is a crucial component of the treatment for depressive disorders. At the MAD Clinic of Richmond, we use the following evidence-based psychotherapy approaches to treat symptoms associated with depression:

  1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is one of the most widely used therapies for depressive disorders. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to depression. Through CBT, individuals learn strategies to reframe their thinking and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

  2. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT is another psychotherapy approach that has gained popularity in recent years as a method of treatment for depressive disorders and various other mental health conditions. ACT is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that combines elements of mindfulness and behavioral therapy to help individuals develop psychological flexibility and improve their well-being.
